Statements urging his return were made at Saturday’s CWC meeting, at which it was decided that elections for the party’s top post will be held between August 21 and September 20 next year. “Entire Congress party and workers unanimously want Rahul Gandhi as leader,” KC Venugopal said. “Everybody agreed unanimously... whether he (Rahul Gandhi) will become or not is up to him. Everybody is of the opinion that Rahul Gandhi should become the party President,” senior leader Ambika Soni was quoted by news agency ANI. THE GOAN I NETWORK CANACONA Barely hours after two sisters were found brutally murdered in Ponda, the State was rocked by news of yet another murder when a 35-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband at their house in Agonda late Saturday evening. According to sources, Sonia Monteiro was allegedly shot at point-blank range by her husband Alfred Pereira, as she was entering the gate of their house. Sonia reportedly collapsed at the gate and was struggling for life, while her mother, who has been staying with Sonia and her family, raised an alarm. Sonia was then lifted in their vehicle and was rushed to the Canacona Community Health Centre, where a doctor on duty declared her dead on arrival. Sources said the incident took place at about 8.45 pm as Sonia, who reportedly began to work a month ago, was returning home. She was allegedly shot by her husband THE GOAN I NETWORK HEALTH MINISTER PROMISES CARDIO CARE FACILITY FOR SOUTH BEFORE ELECTIONS Finally, the Out Patient Departments (OPDs) have started functioning at the South Goa district hospital. Santosh Mirajkar vised to go to the district hospital to avail the OPD services. Hospicio district hospital medical Superintendent Dr Deepa Correia informed that all the OPDs from Hospicio have been shifted. “Today, the first day of the shifting was relatively a smooth affair. We put in place seating arrangements at the new district hospital to ensure patients are not put to inconvenience,” she said. Dr Deepa said the Hospicio building was presently playing host to the casualty and surgery units, adding that these two will be shifted to the district hospital once the CTscan facility is commissioned. MARGAO: Cardio care facility will become a reality at the South Goa district hospital before elections, announced the Health Minister.Questioning why people of South Goa should go to GMC and to avail cardio facilities when the district hospital can provide the same, the Health Minister said the cardio unit will be functional no sooner the cath lab is commissioned at the hospital. To achieve the goal, the government has planned to recruit additional doctors, who will be deputed at the South Goa hospital. “I know that to put up a cardio care unit we need manpower. We are in the process of recruiting doctors at the GMC. We can depute them later to the South hospital to man the cardio unit,” he said. Asserting that the South district hospital should be just one step down to the GMC, the Health Minster insisted that all the facilities are made available at the district hospital at the earliest. The OPDs, which were run from congested rooms at the Hospicio, now enjoy a spacious environment at the district hospital building. This is the second time over the last one year that the Hospicio OPDs have Canacona police at the crime scene, where Sonia Monteiro was allegedly shot at point-blank range by her husband in Agonda. Alfred’s daughter and his mother-in-law tried to stop him from starting his motorcycle, but he managed to run away from the site. The accused is then reported to have rushed to a house in the neighbourhood, where he borrowed a scooter on the pretext that his motorcycle had broken down and proceeded to the Canacona police station. Sources said the daughter then received a call from her father to enquire if her mother was alive or dead and on enquiry said he was at the police station and was surrendering himself to the police. In the meanwhile, a police team from the Agonda police outpost had already rushed to the house and confirmed that the accused was at the Canacona Police Station. THE GOAN I NETWORK PANAJI Is the door for an alliance between the BJP and the MGP really shut or is it ajar? Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s spirited speech at a party workers’ rally near Panaji on Thursday seemed to have shut the door firmly on the alliance when he indicated on more than one occasion that the BJP is going it alone in the upcoming state assembly polls. But mutterings by senior party leaders, including Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik as well Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho and former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Goa in charge for the 2022 polls Devendra Fadnavis suggest that the door might still be tentatively ajar for the MGP to walk in. While such doublespeak is absolutely not a rare phenomenon in politics, the lovehate relationship between the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party over the last few decades needs to be examined in context of the Shiv Sena and South Goa district hospital sets the ball rolling again MARGAO Even as Hospicio’s Out Patient Departments were all shifted to the new district hospital on Saturday, the government has directed the district hospital authorities to make available all amenities to ensure that citizens are not forced to go to private labs and hospitals for blood tests. A day after the Health Minister visited the district hospital to take stock of the situation and ensure there is smooth shifting of the Hospicio services, the ODPs were all shifted to the district hospital on Saturday morning. A number of patients were seen at the district hospital to visit the OPDs. Those who had come to the Hospicio were ad- SPORTS been shifted to the district hospital. This time around, the OPDs are most likely to stay at the district hospital, with the Health Minister categorically ruling out the possibility of making it a Covid facility unless there’s an emergency. “There's now no looking back. We have to move forward. This huge facility cannot be blocked for Covid when cases have come down. Even if there's a spurt of Covid, the government would work out a solution. Serious Covid patients can be accommodated at the GMC Super Specialty block. If need be, we can even notify the ESI hospital, Margao, as a Covid hospital,” the Health Minister added. >Continued on P5 Amit Shah Pramod Sawant Devendra Fadnavis Open to alliance talks: Tanavade PANAJI: Two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah thundered in Taleigao the BJP's resolve to go on its own in the 2022 assembly polls, state BJP President Sadanand Shet Tanavade in a climbdown offered an open invitation to all regional parties, including the MGP and Goa Forward, to join his party for alliance talks. >> See pg 3 BJP combine in neighbouring Maharashtra. Founded in the 1960s, Shiv Sena is Maharashtra’s legacy political party, while the BJP is a relatively new entrant to the western Indian state’s political landscape. When the two parties first aligned together in 1989, Shiv Sena was the alliance's senior partner. Both parties were invested in Hindutva and had a common appeal for the Hindu conservative voters in the state. When the two parties rode to power in 1995, the Shiv Sena had 73 MLAs, while the BJP had 65 MLAs. With time, BJP, which slowly had developed a pan-India appeal, systematically managed to slowly stifle the growth of the Sena, while also expanding its base statewide. The BJP’s increasing footprint also led to a split in more recent times between the two parties, who were once considered natural allies in Maharashtra politics. In Goa too, the BJP was the junior ally in its early coalition with the MGP in the 1994 assembly polls. Riding on the MGP’s stature, the BJP managed to open its account in the state assembly by winning four assembly seats in the polls, while the MGP won 10. But once, it had its foot in the assembly, Manohar Parrikar – who had won the Panaji assembly seat for the first time, while Shripad Naik also won his first assembly election >Continued on P5
