The crash involving Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, which were carrying around 2,000 passengers, and a goods train occurred around 7 pm on Friday near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore. Seventeen coaches were derailed and severely damaged in the accident, trapping hundreds of passengers. Both passenger trains were at a high speed and it has been cited by experts as one of the main reasons for the high number of casualty. The national transporter has initiated a high-level probe that will be headed by the commissioner of railway safety, South Eastern Circle, officials said. HOSPITALS FLUSH WITH PATIENTS Modi at crash site, warns of strict action BALASORE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday promised stringent action against any found guilty for the triple train accident which occurred in Odisha’s Balasore on Friday night. “Stringent action will be taken against those found guilty in the train accident incident. No one will be spared,” Modi said. Prime Minister also promised, “We will give the best possible treatment to those injured in this tragedy”. While sources had earlier said a signalling failure could be the reason behind the crash, railway officials said it is not yet clear if Coromandel Express entered the loop line and hit the stationary goods train or it first derailed and then hit the parked train after entering the loop line. The preliminary probe report, a copy of which is with PTI, said the signal “was given and taken off ON GUARD Senior officer inspects each block and allied units Personally supervises shuffling of all prison inmates Police commandos also summoned to conduct search of cells the inmates was in response to the violent confrontation between Vijay Karbotkar and Tarzan Parsekar in the very premises, which has turned into a breeding ground for gang wars and smuggling of banned substances. “Not a single inmate dared to take a step because they all know too well this officer’s fearless encounters with hardened criminals in the past,” an officer, who was a witness to the dramatic scene, said. He resorted to this extraordinary measure to instill a sense of fear and discipline among the unruly inmates. The jail officials were too not spared. The senior officer sternly warned them of disciplinary action if there were any more outbreaks or smuggling of contraband substances henceforth.
