Tomatoes for instance had shot up to between Rs 80-100 per kilo depending on their quality in the middle of last week but by the weekend they eased to Rs 50-60 per kilo. Similarly onions and pota- toes which were priced at Rs 70-80 on Thursday dropped to Rs 50 per kilo on Saturday. Cabbage and cauliflower had also become cheaper on Saturday at Rs 50 per kilo and traders in Panaji market said, they expect prices to shoot up again next week with operations in the 'mandis' in Belagavi and other areas badly affected by the heavy rains. Dampness causes some of these vegetables to rot faster and costs of handling and transportation shoot up which reflects in the end retail price of the vegetables.
