Several hours after the incident took place between 1-2 am, Maha Kumbh DIG Vaibhav Krishna gave the details of the casualties at a press conference here in the evening. “The incident took place due to the pressure of the crowd. The crowd broke barricades and jumped to the other side, crushing those waiting there. Over 90 injured were rushed to the hospital, of whom 30 died,” he said. Sawant orders probe into lapses in releasing Amthane Dam water PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday ordered an inquiry into major lapses by the Water Resources Department (WRD) in failing to release water from the Amthane dam on time. Speaking to media persons, Sawant said that strict action would be initiated against the concerned engineer for delay in releasing the water and for failing to maintain the dam, whose gates were found jammed, unexpectedly when the need to tap the water from an alternate source arose. Under this, the State has proposed introducing AI traffic system for lane-driving, installation of remote sensor based PUC system linked with transport department server, new expressways/bypasses to avoid congestion, infrastructure decongestion of road, retrofitting of particular filters in diesel vehicles, plan to check fuel adulteration and random monitoring of fuel quality. As a measure to monitor industrial pollution, the GSPCB has already installed Online Emission Monitoring System for 17 category industries and also the steel manufacturing units are directed to install online system.
