The legal authority for the strike and whether Trump consulted Congress beforehand was not immediately clear. The stunning, lightning-fast American military action, which plucked a nation’s sitting leader from office, echoed the US invasion of Panama that led to the surrender and seizure of its leader, Manuel Antonio Noriega, in 1990 exactly 36 years ago. Sources said Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were US ‘going to run’ Venezuela until safe transition of power: Trump WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said on Saturday that US is ‘going to run’ Venezuela until safe transition of power can take place. He claimed the American presence was already in place, though there were no immediate signs that the US was running the country. “We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition”, Trump said at a Mara-Lago news conference where he boasted that this extremely successful operation should serve as warning to anyone who would threaten American sovereignty or endanger American lives. dragged from their bedroom by elite US forces during the raid. Maduro’s government accused the United States of attacking civilian and military installations, calling it an imperialist attack and urging citizens to take to the streets. FROM FAILURE TO FIX… Can Goa’s 3 main regulators redeem themselves in 2026? Spotlight on PWD, GSPCB and GCZMA AGNELO PEREIRA THE GOAN I MAPUSA From crumbling roads and unchecked noise pollution to controversial coastal clearances, 2025 exposed serious governance gaps in three of Goa’s most critical regulatory bodies – the Public Works Department (PWD), the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA). Together, their failures not only caused public hardship but also raised fundamental questions about accountability, coordination and institutional integrity. As the State steps into a new year, restoring public trust will depend on whether these departments can move beyond routine assurances and demonstrate meaningful reform. The annual cycle has become predictable: roads collapse during the monsoon, public anger rises and political assurances follow – usually with promises that repairs will be completed before Chaturthi or Diwali. These assurances have now lost credibility, reduced to fodder for memes and viral videos mocking both governance and political will. PWD engineers concede that unscientific trenching and poor reinstatement of roads are a major factor. >Continued on P6 Shot in the arm for startups, govt New Year day sees fewer mishaps than last year: Data approves seed capital for 8 firms THE GOAN I NETWORK VENTURES RELATE TO HEALTHCARE, AI, TOURISM ETC THE GOAN I NETWORK PANAJI The Goa government has cleared seed capital support for eight startups under its Startup Policy 2025. The committee reviewed applications under the Seed Capital Grant Scheme, which offers one-time assistance of up to Rs 10 lakh to startups that have developed a minimum viable product. The meeting, co-chaired by IT Minister Rohan Khaunte along with senior government officials, reviewed 27 applications received by the Startup and IT Promotion Cell. The Goan on Saturday will connect to and be a viable and comprehensive read for locals, other Indians in Goa, NRI and foreigners. It will also be a bridge for Goans in other parts of India all over the world to their home land. The Goan is published by Goa's most reputed industrial houses.
